When I entered Franck Adam’s apartment this evening, I felt like I was back in New York in one of the West Village’s distinct loft spaces overlooking the Hudson River.  This setting provided the perfect background for a conversation that would span 25 years back, when the seed for Phase Deux Musiq was unknowingly planted.

AN EVENING WITH PHASE DEUX MUSIQ

Franck Adam and Richie Jones’ friendship began 25 years ago in New York in a Greenwich Village niteclub.  ”This random guy comes up to me while I’m in the DJ booth and I’m thinking, who the hell is this guy?”  Franck says in a heavy New York accent with a chuckle as Richie nods his head, cracks a smile and adds, “I was playing at a niteclub out in Long Island called Zanzibar and I had a group of regulars that were really diggin’ what I was playing. One night they tell me they were at this place called Images and that the DJ there was playing some really good music- ‘kinda like what you play’ so I decided to check it out.   “And the rest you could say is history,” says Franck.

Although they lost touch when Franck moved to Miami in 1998,  their love of music inevitably kept their friendship afloat.   During that time Richie Jones built some impressive studio credentials including production work with Celine Dion, Beyonce, Blondie, Jennifer Hudson and Taylor Dayne.  In 1999,  his work with Jennifer Lopez earned him a Grammy Nomination for Best Dance Recording as producer of Waiting for Tonight.

Meanwhile Franck focused on building his name as a DJ by spreading the ‘New York Sound’ in South Beach at local hotspots like Segafredo on Lincoln Road and eventually going to the UK, Italy, Moscow and Greece to play at some of the largest nightclubs in the world.  He even got asked to play at the Giorgio Armani Red Event in Earl’s Court in the UK which had over 3,000 attendees.  “I was so mesmerized to be playing the music I loved to Alicia Keys, Leonardo Dicaprio and all these other famous people.  The best part is that everyone was receptive to what I was playing and we had an amazing time.”

When Richie’s mainstream work ended dramatically in New York around 2005 due to the sudden closing of the  production company he was working for,  Richie decided to take a short hiatus from the music industry to figure out what the next direction of his career would be.  Fate stepped in when Franck bumped into one of Richie’s old business associates in Miami and decided to give him a call.   “When Franck and I reconnected we both realized we were at a place where we were ready for the next phase of our life- that of finally focusing on what we love,” says Richie.

In 2008, along with the help of long time friend Eric Kupper, who has played on, remixed, and produced over 1700 records for artists spanning every musical genre, Phase Deux Musiq (PDM) was born.

“Phase Deux translates to Phase two and its basically Phase two of our professional lives,” says Franck.  “Phase Deux Musiq is the name of our recording company as well as our identity, our brand.”  Richie, explains it as a return to where he started.  ”I went from Dance Music to Mainstream/Pop Music and now this is a chance to apply all I’ve learned in the last 25 years to being a record company owner for the music I love.  It’s completely hands on.”

And following their heart is already proving a success.  Phase Deux’s release, “Make Me Beautiful” by Sofia Rubina, licensed to UK House Label, MN2S jumped to the #1 position on Traxsource three days after its release in January and remained in the top 10 charts for nine weeks.

They also held a Saturday bi-monthly residency for over a year at the Vagabond in which their night Defunkt, drew back a connection between the current Future Disco tracks of the underground nitelife scene to the historic tracks from the legendary New York City nightclub, Danceteria.  Up next for Phase Deux Musiq is a track titled “Bring the Love” which they are remixing for Nicki Richards, who’s recorded and performed with Madonna, Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige and has been the main vocalist on many of Frankie Knuckles’ tracks.

When asked what their greatest achievement to date is, Franck’s gets a gleam in his eye and he says confidently, “Its on its way.”

Come catch Phase Deux in action this Thursday at Oasis in the back room of Purdy Lounge and see why Miami is lucky to have this dynamic duo operating out of its own backyard.

Some of you may be wondering- where did Saraswati come from and how did we get the inspiration to put together our events? Well as we celebrate our 2 year anniversary this week I’d like to share the story with you.

Saraswati was founded in 2008 when we decided that Miami needed to have a home for the Global Soul artists and DJs that were becoming staples in the New York and Chicago house scenes. In our very first party we brought down Joann Jimenez’s infamous Brazilian party ALMA from New York with DJ Tru and Miller Cruz and when we got over 200 people in attendance we realized that there was a need for these types of events in Miami.

Next project came a few months later when nightlife Promoter, Jose Fabian called us to team up on putting together a party at The Standard Hotel on Saturday nights which soon became Simple Saturdays at the Standard (S3). This party ran from 8pm – 12am each Saturday and although we thought the time slot would be hard to fill, the response was incredible and people welcomed the early party as a fun
night out with good music and friends in a chill environment. Through S3 we also united Miami’s own Global Soul DJs including Djinji Brown, DJ Chilly, Andre Soul, Stell*R, Aladdin, Man-X, Phase Duex and Ivan Diaz as well as visiting DJs such as Julius The Mad Thinker, Eric Kupper and Scott Wozniak.

Unfortunately a change in management at the Standard caused the party to end in March, but we knew we were on to something good and decided to plan a WMC event along with Underground House Magazine and Shades of Redd that would really tear the roof down. So was born The Future- our 2009 Winter Music Conference Party at La Flora Hotel with Boddhi Satva, David Jonez, Ivan Diaz, Trinidadian Deep, Julius the Mad Thinker, Filsonik and Djinji Brown.

In June, we worked closely with Julius the Mad Thinker to plan the film shoot for his latest music video, Dejame - in which one of Miami’s favorite house heads, Sal Sanchez, was cast to play 70 year old Amelio Fernandez, an older Cuban gentleman who gets so inspired when he hears Julius’ set that he decides to quit his job and play the congas for the rest of his life. The video shoot began in Little Havana and takes us all throughout Miami as we arrive in the rooftop of Ocean Drive’s Casanova Hotel for Amelio’s debut.

Then in July we were off to New York for AfroBionic Beat Down with Djinji Brown to introduce the Big Apple to the up and coming Miami Sound. Our collaboration with PolyRhythm NYC on this event turned out to be a good one and the response, especially from the dancers was strong.

September brought a very special party to us when we helped put together the 40th birthday of our good friend Laura Ortiz, an amazing woman that has been a loyal Saraswati supporter since the beginning. We were all proud to surprise her with a new Serato setup as a way to support her new venture, DJing.

In October, our next event, For the Art of Love debuted with a little help from our friends over at Snip Salon. This was our first attempt at a charity event and we aimed to create a makeshift salon (with furniture donated by Ronen Rentals) in the Miami Art Space in order to collect enough hair donations to make a full wig for Locks of Love. The event was a whole lot of fun and all the ArtWalk attendees got really into it. We even had a spectator decide to snip their own locks for this good cause.

December came all too fast and we kicked off the month with an Art Basel party we called Art l Baile, which introduced the art of Alexandra Cespedes to all those visiting Miami with a dance party in the back room of Purdy Lounge with music by Bugz in the Attic’s Daz-I-Kue and Saraswati’s own, Ivan Diaz. The event could not have happened without the help of Miss Angelina of Globaile, who brought her creative ideas and positive energy to the table.

The success lead us to believe that we could begin our own weekly party in this very same room which is now Oasis (running in its 7th week) but not before we took over the Vagabond with the help of Back Door Bamby for Julius’ Dejame video release party on January 9th. Although it was a whopping 36 degrees that evening, the vibe was amazing that night and everything just seemed to fall into place. As a matter of fact, everyone walking around in their leather jackets and scarves kinda made me feel like I was back in New York for one of those wintry night celebrations.

Oh and how can I forget our New Year’s Eve Rooftop Party, where we teamed up with Globaile once again to throw what our guests called- “The Best New Year’s Ever!” The celebration at the Decowalk on Ocean Drive offered the setting of a private rooftop party with the view of all the action and craziness happening in South Beach that night. You’ll have to watch the video below to see what I mean . . .

On January 13th, we began our latest venture Oasis in which we continue to introduce locals to the Global Soul scene and offer the best for our guests through each and every event we do.

This Thursday, February 25, 2010 join us as we celebrate our 2 year Anniversary in conjunction with Oasis in the back room of Purdy Lounge (1811 Purdy Ave). We are having a very special guest DJ from Boston named Max Pela to play with our resident Ivan Diaz. along with Ade on the percussions and Miss A gracin’ us with her vocals on the mic.

Come celebrate this mile marker with us because Saraswati’s success could not have been possible without your support. Saraswati’s events provide us all with a place to be ourselves, have fun and release all the craziness of everyday life. So come express yourself on the dancefloor!
